According to excavation findings, the island was inhabited ever since the Prehistoric Times (3.500 - 2.500 B.C.). As first known inhabitants two Thracian tribes have been reported: the Saii and the Hedones, who were chased from the island by the Phoenicians. Much later, around the 7th century B.C. the island was colonized by the Greeks. They got there from Paros island with Telesiklis as their leader. They soon discovered that the island was rich in minerals and covered with forests, which made them turn to trade as their main source of income.
After that they fortified the island by building strong marble walls (at a perimeter of 9-10 km) with three defense towers and many gates. The state of Thassos became really strong around the 5th century B.C. with a strong war and merchant fleet, many colonies and an economy and civilization that were flourishing.
